The team

UTV Live at 6 is Northern Ireland’s top performing TV evening news programme and our content is recognised across the UK for its high quality.

The role 

We are looking for a talented production journalist to join our team in Belfast working across a range of platforms.

The successful candidate will have a track record in finding their own stories and will demonstrate their ability to bring ideas for news lines and treatments.

They will need to take the lead on bulletin production and work towards our flagship news programme. Being adept at using a variety of technology including for picture editing and the formation of graphics is also crucial.

Reacting to breaking news and researching more complex issues thoroughly and accurately for both ‘on the day’ stories and future planning are key parts of the role. Having contacts who can help inform and verify our work is important too.

This is a position for a team player committed to the vision for UTV and ITV, who can show great initiative to enhance coverage at every turn. This may be in the form of scriptwriting, sourcing and selecting content or raising production values for filmed and live output.

We now have a number of platforms and our journalists should be passionate about seeing their work reach audiences wherever, whenever and however they access our content, with the skills to match.

If you’re interested you will need first class editorial judgement and a full knowledge of media law, regulatory codes and health and safety requirements in our diverse workplace.

In addition, you will need to be able to show how you cope in a demanding and changing environment to meet frequent, tight deadlines, working calmly and inclusively under pressure.

Skills you’ll need (minimum criteria)

  • A sound knowledge of media law, regulatory compliance as well as health and safety legislation.
  • Understanding of editorial priorities and their application.
  • Experience of delivering news stories and treatments. 
  • Ability to use contacts to generate original ideas for news output.
  • Strong writing and technical production skills.

  • Innovative thinking to source and produce news stories in the most engaging way across a variety of platforms. 
  • High level of competence in recognising and resolving editorial, regulatory, legal and health and safety challenges.
  • Commitment to a team and a company with the ability to work positively to tight deadlines in a pressurised environment.
  • Evidence of promoting diversity and inclusion internally and externally. 
  • Diligent, organised and professional approach.   

 Please note, the rostered hours for this role will include weekend working , late shifts as well as early morning shifts and Bank Holidays.  The working pattern will incorporate late shifts (typically 00:00 finish) as well as early morning (typically 05:00 start). You are expected to provide your own means of transportation to and from your main workplace.
